It can be easy to communicate in written media. It is entirely different being face-to-face. So much human communication occurs outside the spoken word. I was reminded of this fact while working on a copyediting project.
The assignment was to locate a company that had a document in need of editing. To accomplish this, I needed to meet in person with the customer and help select the document. Since my entire degree has been online, this was a unique experience. Here you see the completed document after many revisions.
The customer required regular communication throughout. I learned the majority of their customers were not primarily English speakers. That knowledge led to shorter sentences that were easier to read. I grouped by subject and reduced the number of fonts.
Here is the original document with revisions left in so you can see how it changed.
The document was disorganized and had many spelling and syntax errors. It was confusing and difficult to read and understand.
They were entirely happy with their new contract.
